Let's Play!

Some paintings can’t wait! They have to happen fast, before the feeling fades. Side Eye was the first portrait in my playful art series, a quick, expressive outlet that captures those impulsive, creative moments. At other times, I enjoy slow, careful painting with lots of reworking and layers of paint, but for this project, spontaneity was the priority.
This collection began with quick sketches of different moods. I loved the loose, sketchy feel, so I carried that same energy into the paintings. There are intentional gaps and overlaps to keep that impulsive, spontaneous quality. The minimal colour palette lets the expression be the focal point.

Side Eye has a cheeky element; a touch of disapproval. Growing up, I was always told not to screw up my face, which I did to show my disapproval (a habit I still have!). The expression in this painting reminds me of those memories and makes me smile.
Here is a short ode to my Side Eye portrait in Jamaican Patois:
Kiss teet
Cut eye
No sah
Dat nu sound right
